Cactus Wren Pair on Cholla Cactus

An image that was on my mind for several years. Happened this weekend finally. I found this Cactus Wren pair hanging around Cholla Cactus at about 11 AM and waited till 4 PM to get it in better light. I figured they would do something special like this. The proposal behavior lasted only few seconds.

I had a chance to photograph with wildlife photographer Jim Urbach the other day. We were setup at local pond to shoot Semipalmated Plover and Wilson's phalarope. A black-necked stilt landed in front of the lens in golden light. Here is a snap of this beauty.

I was out in the field on Saturday with wildlife photographer Steven Metildi. Steve has a great set of wildlife photographs on his website. Please check. I especially love his puffin images from Alaska.

We drove through Sonoran Desert for several hours and photographed desert wildlife. We arrived at Morongo Valley located near Palm Desert during later part of the day to photograph strikingly beautiful Vermilion Flycatcher.

This bird was so hard to photograph. He would not land on my custom perch. I ended up photographing him on a dead tree branch. Here is a snap from the session.

I just got back from a day trip in extreeme southern california desert. I am happy to photograph some desert birds on blooming ocotillo plants, also nesting cactus wrens (the largest wren in North America). I took these images in a hearbeat though lighting was not in my favour.

Snow Goose Migration and Blackbirds

Here are couple of images from Cibola located in the floodplain of the lower Colorado River in Sonoran desert. Winter is the best time to visit this area. It reaches 120 degrees in summer here. Thousands of Snow geese, Canada geese and sandhill cranes stop by here in winter. I live about 175 miles west of this place and often photograph here.

Great Kiskadee is an instantly recognizable largest flycatcher. I have had a pleasure of watching and photographing this elusive bird closely at Martin's Ranch in Edinburg, South Texas. Thanks to wonderful people John and Audrey for their southern hospitality and giving me opportunity for watching this bird. I have had an opportunity to watch and photograph many other Texas varieties like western kingbird, brown thrasher, painted bunting, ground dove and many more which I have not processed yet.

Texas Wildlife

Texas is my favorite spring destination for wildlife photography. I have extensively travelled through the state in 2007. I would like to thank my friend and a native Texan Mr. Dennis Fehler for all his help and guidance while I was travelling in the state. Being born and raised in Texas, Dennis has learned most about his home state. Mr. Fehler is a Harvard graduate in Landscape Architecture, a true nature lover and a musician ( http://www.thebadseeds.com/ ). I have had a pleasure working with him for several years on various projects in the past.

A day in Sonoran Desert

I had a pleasure spending a day in extreme southern California desert. My interest was to photograph a male Burrowing Owl in its complete breeding plumage. It was a typical warm sunny California day. Water holes were active with the wildlife in the desert.

With few hours of driving, I have spotted a Burrowing Owl nest. I have noticed a male peeking out every few seconds to defend its territory and breeding. I have decided to get down on the dirt with tripod set to very low. I was shooting with Canon 600 IS lens and Canon EOS 5D with 1.4 tele converter. As I have decent reach with long lens, I distanced myself enough not to disturb the bird and its breeding activity.

After 3 hours of wait, the male came out with its typical "who who" call. Very soon I realized that it is trying to defend the territory. I did not want disturb him any longer. So, I grabbed few shots and moved on to photograph other birds.

It was quite a thrilling experience. Here are couple of wallpapers from the session.

I finally had a time to process images from my Bosque del Apache, New Mexico trip this past winter. Burrowing Owl and Mule deer images were taken at Cibola National Wildlife Reguge on the way back to home. Spring is around the corner

Recentely I have made trip to San Jacinto Valley Where i usually photograph wildlife. It was spectacular out there with fields of yellow flowers stretching out on both sides of the road. Ponds are loaded with shorebirds and woods are loaded with singing warblers. I am very excited about this spring.

One of my favorite places to watch and photograph Brown Pelicans in Southern California is LA JOLLA cliffs, San Diego. I stopped by here few days back to watch these beautiful birds in winter plumage. Here are couple of images I have captured on that day. They display stunning colors during this season.

Curlew and Whimbrel

My favourite North American shorebirds are Long-billed Curlew and Whimbrel. Couple of best places to watch these elusive birds closely in their natural habitat are San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Southern California.

I have had a pleasure of shooting these two birds in my several recent trips to San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

Long-billed Curlew is the largest shorebird in North America. Breeds in the grasslands. Whimbrel is a similar shorebird with slightly shorter bill. Long-billed Curlew and Whimbrel are often seen together in the grasslands.

Bathing Stilts

It was a real thrill to watch these Black-necked Stilts (Himantopus mexicanus) taking a bath at San Jacinto Wildlife Area this past week. I thought of sharing one of the image as desktop wallpaper from the series I have shot.

I have added new desktop wallpaper to my nature wallpaper collection. This was taken on Nov 6th, 2007 at San Jacinto Wildlife Area, Riverside County. It was late evening, I was walking at one of the ponds with my Canon 1D Mark III and Canon 600 MM lens. I spotted this coyote walking close to the pond and trying to catch a coot for dinner.

Close encounter with bobcat

On Sunday (October 28th, 2007) I came upon a bobcat while taking a bird walk at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, not twenty feet away, sitting and licking his back paw. I was walking on trail with my Canon 1D Mark III and Canon 600 mm IS lens. When I saw him very close to the pond I stopped walking.

I read some where that bobcats are pretty harmless. So, I was not really afraid of him but at the same time I did not want to stand that close to him. Looks like he read my mind, after few minutes, he walked softly in front of me. What a memorable experience that was!
